I typically tell clients that the goal of the home page -- the only goal of the home page, really -- is to captivate the attention of the browser and entice them to look around the rest of the site. It's a brief outline of what you do and why the prospect should choose you over your competitors. Then, for the people that actually care about all the other stuff, you can outline your history, beliefs, etc. on the "about us" page.
So with that, 'Websites For Less is a small company with big dreams'. It was all started by Zach in February of 2009, after he came up to lovely Greeley, CO for school and noticed a huge need for online establishment. Having had about three years of design experience prior to that point, and obviously growing up in the "age of technology", as many people have so dubbed it, Zach sought out to fill this need.
Would you like to hear the story of what kicked it all into gear? If not, feel free to skip the next few paragraphs.
It was a night like any other brisk winter's night in Greeley; quiet streets, clear-ish skies, and that particular smell that Greeley has on brisk winter's nights that the residents of Greeley will know what I'm talking about.
But there was one fundamental difference -- this otherwise-ordinary brisk winter's night would soon change Zach's life forever. Of course, he was not to know it at the time.
This ordinary night happened to be the one month anniversary of Zach and his then girlfriend. Some background on Zach: he loves pizza. And quite naturally, he was inclined to celebrate the momentous occasion with pizza. His girlfriend at the time, however, was probably beginning to get sick of all the pizza he insisted on eating all the time, and felt that perhaps sushi would be a better choice. Now Zach had tried sushi -- with much trepidation, I might add -- on one occasion prior, and thereafter vowed never to do so ever again. Being that he was disinclined to go back on that promise he made to himself, they collectively elected to get their respective foods to-go, and just eat them together.
And here's where that magic moment that catalyzed a whole chain reaction of events happened. Zach called in his pizza for pickup, and they then went to look up the website of the sushi restaurant so she could select her evening's celebratory raw fish. And wouldn't you believe it -- the sushi restaurant didn't have a website! Because they didn't have an online presence where browsers could view their menu, they effectively lost business!
It was at that point that Zach had an epiphany. Like a potato sack that instead of potatoes is filled with bricks, hitting him right in the face and probably breaking his nose, among other things, in the process, he realized, "I need to move forward with this."
And that he did. Off to a solid start, Zach soon found himself juggling his schooling and his business. After careful analysis, he determined that the prudent decision would be to just run with it, follow his heart, and be a full-time website designer.
Two solid months passed of eighty- to one hundred-hour weeks, and then it happened -- he got his first client. Since that time, the company has grown from being just "that young website designer guy" to a culmination of all sorts of awesome people that he doesn't know what he'd do without.
But wherever the business goes in the coming years, it all comes back to one principle foundation, which is to fill the need that exists for a design firm that knows what they're doing, and isn't too much of a pain in the butt to work with.
